More competition for seasonal jobs this year Abridged: WQAD-TV

DAVENPORT, IA - With the holidays around the corner, this is the time to be thinking about a seasonal job. But with more stores doing less hiring while more job seekers flood the market, competition is fierce! For example, a Halloween Express store in Davenport, IA was flooded with 50 applications for just three positions.

They didn't even advertise or have to put a sign up in the window. People were submitting job applications even before the store had their stock out. That demand illustrates the kind of competition you can expect for seasonal jobs. There are more people looking for work but fewer opportunities. People that have traditionally had full time employment and have now been laid off are applying for seasonal jobs just to supplement their income.

"I think people are taking whatever they can find," said Mark Westby, 50. "Part-time is better than no time," added Lewis Dixon, 45. The experts advise that looking for a job is a job itself. For seasonal work, that means finding ways to stand out from the other applicants. They suggest applying early and often.

Are your references costing you the job? Abridged: ABC NEWS

LOS ANGELES, CA -- With so many people job hunting for a new job, there's a fair amount of confusion around staying in your references' good graces - and ensuring they don't blow an opportunity for you. To set the record straight, we've collected suggestions from several headhunters, hiring managers and seasoned job seekers.

Make sure you give them a heads up! The biggest faux pas is that people don't ask their contacts to be their references or notify them when they're going to be called. To ensure your references are ready, willing and able, it's important to check in with them each time you give their name to a potential employer. It's also important to let them know that your job hunting process may take awhile and may involve multiple calls from employers and recruiters.

Make sure you also fill them in on the job. It's not enough to tell your references that a potential employer may be writing or calling. You have to give them some context, too. Send them the job description, your view on how the interview process has gone up to that point and a current copy of your resume.

Go Social: Tips to make job hunting easier Abridged: Sentinel Source

DENVER, CO -- Job hunting has gone from searching the classifieds to roaming online job boards and career search engines. But before you sit down in front of your computer, ask yourself some important questions and then be prepared to go social. Marc Scoleri, director of Career Services at The Art Institute of New York City, recommends doing a self-directed job search in conjunction with other search techniques.

A self-directed job search requires the job-seeker to take into account personal preferences and businesses of interest. Realizing personal preferences and having a sense of self-awareness as it relates to a career is important when clarifying which companies to research. Once a job seeker has identified the kinds of companies and industries to pursue, then it's important to put a plan together to target recruiters and companies based on your findings.

Many of today's recruiters and hiring managers prefer to interview someone who went out of their way to contact them. This is where socializing begins and networks are developed. Make sure you have created an account on LinkedIn.com - an online networking tools for professionals. On average, it takes 65 contacts to create a network large enough to result in substantial and meaningful findings on LinkedIn.com. Go social today and start utilizing social marketing techniques in addition to your traditional online job search.

Maybe it's time to make changing your career a priority? Career assessment used to be a process of simply following your gut feelings and doing a little research into your fields of interest. Today, career assessment is much more refined and looks not only at job fields but also spotlights the focus on you, the individual. The solution is alignment, and there are three steps. First, discover what you are designed to do, then do it and minimize everything else. Career tests are an integral part of the new job search process. Your next job interview may be on webcam Abridged: TIME CNN

NEW YORK, NY -- Get ready for a closeup: your next job interview might be on webcam. Looking to save time and money, companies are turning to video-chat software as a cheap, low-hassle way to vet job candidates. That means a growing number of people looking for work are meeting their prospective new bosses not at the office but in the comfort of their own home.

Naturally, the transition from in-person to online isn't without its hiccups. Fuzzy transmissions, dropped calls and unusual disruptions are all par for the course. What's the draw? Largely money, but also that it's a time saver. Last year, as executives at online retailer Zappos.com looked to cut expenses, they noticed how much the firm spent on travel. It easily cost $1,000 a pop to fly out job candidates and put them up for the night. The firm had used Skype internally, so about six months ago, recruiters started trying it for interviews.

Their opinion: a video link does a pretty good job of replacing an in-person meeting in a way that a phone call can't. If you see facial expressions and body language, you have a different sense of what a person is saying. Now, instead of flying out 20 finalists for a job, many companies are first screening applicants with Skype. Then they bring in ONLY the best two or three candidates.
