How much personal info should I post online? Abridged: Posting Online Blog

AUSTIN, TX -- First, decide how concerned you are with having your personal contact information on the Internet. How important is it for you to be able to "disconnect" your Internet resume when you are no longer looking for work? If resume confidentiality and Internet disconnecting are important to you, we recommend following these tips.

Choose the confidentiality feature when posting your resume online. Also make sure you do not have your personal information in the body of your resume. Replace this information with "Confidential Resume". One other suggestion is to get a separate email address to use for your job search activities. Make sure the email address doesn't contain identifying information like your last name. Then, once your job search is over, you can cancel the email address at anytime.

If controlling the distribution of your resume is important to you, using the confidentiality feature on job boards is key. This way when you have secured a new job your personal information will not be exposed online to other recruiters and hiring managers will not be able to reach you.

Why little mistakes matter in your job search Abridged: USNEWS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The fact is, everyone makes mistakes. But when you're on a job search, a small blunder takes on far greater importance than it would in most contexts. So, why do such little things matter? Well, when you're screening applicants, you only have a small pool of information about each person. When someone makes a mistake--arrives late, say, or gives a horrible answer to an interview question--it looms much larger in the whole.

Here's what can happen in a hiring manager's head when a job candidate makes a noticeable mistake: "She told me she was going to send me this writing sample Monday, but then she sent it on Tuesday without acknowledging the delay. This might be out of character for her; everyone screws up occasionally. But if I ignore this possible red flag and hire her, and then she turns out to be scattered and bad with deadlines, I'm going to be kicking myself for not having paid attention to this sign now."

So what can job seekers do when they, like all human beings, make a mistake? Two things: 1. Acknowledge it. Don't hope that if you don't mention it, it won't be noticed. 2. Say it's out of character for you. This gets at the heart of what the hiring manager is wondering; she's looking for assurance that this isn't your usual way of operating. You'd be surprised by how few people do that and how much it will matter.

Trends in hiring that you need to know Abridged: Server Watch

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Robert Half International and CareerBuilder recently issued the 2009 Employment Dynamics and Growth Expectations (EDGE) Report, which provides an overview of the current hiring environment, as well as a glimpse of what the post-recession staffing landscape will look like. Here are some findings you should be aware of:

  1. It's taking hiring managers 4.5 to 14.4 weeks to fill a vacancy. A shortage of qualified applicants was noted as the top hiring challenge.
  2. Companies aren't focusing exclusively on full-time additions. 40% said they intend to bring in contract, part-time or temp employees.
  3. 45% of workers plan to change employers or careers when the economy recovers.
  4. IT is expected to be a top area for change in the coming years. When managers were asked which departments will add positions first, technology ranked first.
While no one can predict when the business climate will accelerate and to what degree, job seekers that stay on top of industry trends will have a competitive advantage when things turn around.

How to empower your job search Abridged: HUB Pages

DENVER, CO -- Job hunting can seem like the most tedious and disheartening task you set out for yourself, especially in this market. It can get to the point where you get so frustrated that you want to give up or you figure, "What's the point?" The trick to job hunting in today's market is to be versatile. Don't follow the same stale standards that everyone's been doing for centuries. Branch out and try new tactics, and learn how to utilize all of your time looking for a job.

One key tip to empower your job search is to read trade magazines. You may be wondering, "What in the world is a trade magazine?" To newcomers, a trade magazine or journal is almost like a secret society where there are industry trends and updated information about what is currently going on in the market. From a learning standpoint, you can get a lot of insight and information about the constantly shifting industries in today's economy by reading them. Many of these trade magazines even post current job openings. Keep yourself in the game by being knowledgeable and also find out who's currently hiring.

Admittedly it takes effort on your part--but it pays off in your understanding about a particular area of the marketplace and who is doing what. Job seekers need to keep their skills current and continue to learn about the marketplace. One of the ways to track this information is by consistently reading trade magazines and journals.

Obsess Much? Staying busy keeps you sane Abridged: Spin Strategy Blog

ORANGE COUNTY, CA -- Even the most confident of us obsess a bit in a job search. Why? Because "how is it possible that a smart person with great experience isn't being called for interviews?" Once the job search moves into months not weeks, you start to wonder. Wondering becomes worry and worry can become obsession. So how do you know if you are obsessing?

1. You're consistently going "off plan" to check in with a recruiter
2. You're continually e-mailing the employer to see if they got your resume
3. You have your email set-up to check for new messages every 5 minutes
4. Your cell phone is set-up to notify you when a new message comes in.
5. You berate the hiring manager for not seeing the value and skills you offer

Of course this is all wasted time and, importantly, wasted energy. If you find yourself obsessing, build a communication plan. Decide who is in your job search network and build a plan to reach out on a periodic basis. Change your email and cell phone settings so you are not "prompted" to check e-mail throughout the day. Plan events, meetings and special projects that will keep you busy.
