Job market starts to show some improvement
NEW YORK, NY -- The pace of U.S. job losses has slowed but the labor market is expected to remain weak, according to reports released this month. Private-sector employers cut 473,000 jobs in June, a 2.5% improvement from the revised 485,000 drop in May. While the economy has shown some signs of stabilization, unemployment is likely to remain high for at least several more months.
Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. reported that the number of job cuts announced in June fell for the fifth straight month. Challenger said job cut announcements by U.S. employers totaled 74,393 in June, a 33% decline from May. It was the lowest total since March 2008 and 9% lower than the number of job cuts announced in the same month a year ago. "This recent drop-off may be indicative of an overall downward trend in layoff activity," said John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
Job cuts in financial services, industrial-goods manufacturing, computer and consumer products have slowed considerably and may continue to do so with the economy stabilized. The competition for jobs is tough right now and it appears that some employers have reached the staffing levels they need to make it through the recession.

Keys to cracking the green job market
CHICAGO, IL -- With all the talk about green collar workers and the stimulus money that has been allocated to green workforce development, little attention has been paid to the demographic in this survey: highly qualified, well-educated people who are willing and ready to move into the green sector. So what's the hold up? What are the challenges they're facing as they try to channel their skills and background towards the green sector?
Beyond the 69% who say there just aren't enough green jobs, 41% say they don't have the proper training and 33% say they just don't know where to look. What this illuminates is a basic need for training programs and clear direction for job seekers on how and where to find green jobs. The immense sense of hope and optimism hung upon green jobs was multiplied exponentially by the state of the economy and soaring unemployment rates.
Yes, the sector is still growing despite the economy. Green companies are hiring, but not at a rate that can keep pace with the demand. There might not be a green job for you right now, but in six months or a year, when the dust settles from the economic collapse, there will be. The stepping stone in between, and how you'll succeed in separating yourself from the crowd when that time comes, is training and preparation.
Simple ways to energize your job search
CLEVELAND, OH -- There are hundreds of ways to go about a job hunt and it's important that you use multiple strategies to be successful. Here are the top ways a job hunter must think during their job search:
Have courage and move beyond your comfort zone. You need to be brave and do things you haven't done before. In every economic cycle there are winners and losers. Companies grow and companies fail. Make it a team effort. Network with people to help you find a job. Build a team of people who love you and connect you with the world. Take action each and every day. Do something specific that moves your job hunt forward along a specific plan. Learn something new every day. Job hunters need to be continuously improving all their skills. Adopt a sales and marketing mindset. Take the position that you're a product and that you want to sell that product.
Is it time to update your job skills?
NEW YORK, NY -- If you think that the only way to earn a degree is to spend gobs of money and traverse across a complicated college campus, taking anywhere from two to eight years to get your Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's or even doctorate degree...think again. With advances in technology, you can now get your degree online, from an accredited university in your spare time and from the comfort of your own home.
Jennifer Day, Chief of the Education and Social Stratification Branch at the U.S. Census Bureau says, "In 1999, average annual earnings ranged from $19,000 for high school dropouts, to $26,000 for high school graduates, and $45,000 for college graduates and $99,000 for the holders of professional degrees. That includes medical doctors, dentists, veterinarians and lawyers.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau the difference in lifetime earnings between a high school diploma and bachelor's degree is a million dollars. Add on a master's degree and you can expect to earn an additional half a million dollars in earnings. Those with professional degrees earn much more - about 4.4 million dollars during their working life. Tips for working with headhunters and recruiters
SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Headhunters often have direct lines into desired positions, but also serve as gatekeepers who reject candidates that don't fit the bill. The key is finding out how to work with recruiters so you can be considered for the position you want. First, remember that a headhunter, or recruiter, works for the employer. That means you don't set the rules and must make yourself a desirable candidate.
Come across as arrogant, difficult or lacking skills, and the recruiter will move on to other candidates. However, if you are a professional, possessing valuable and up-to-date skills, the headhunter will keep you in mind for all sorts of job openings. Some tips for working with headhunters include:
You should be able to clearly and concisely explain to a recruiter why you would be a valuable employee. Don't lie. Headhunters are almost certain to check up on your background, and they'll catch you in untruths. Do your homework. It's fair to ask the headhunter about other clients and expertise. Do your research and Trust your gut. If you choose to work with multiple headhunters, let each of them know what you're doing. Otherwise, more than one might promote you to the same employer, and that can be a problem.
Let a recruiter help you find your next job!
NEW YORK, NY -- When looking for a job, you may want to consider working with a recruiter. Recruiters, otherwise known as head hunters or search consultants, are hired by companies to find candidates for them, and often know about unadvertised jobs.
It's important to note, that recruiters do not charge the job seeker. The company pays a fee, typically when a candidate is hired. When contacting a recruiter send a resume and cover letter just as though you were applying for a job. If a recruiter calls you, always call back - even if you are not currently job hunting. You never know when circumstances might change and you might need job search assistance.

Real networking is about generosity, not greed
HAYWARD, CA -- Real networking is about finding ways to make other people more successful. It is about working hard to give more than you get. People who reach the greatest professional heights help each other. They find each other jobs, they invest time and money in each other's ideas and they make sure their kids get help getting into the best schools, get the right internships, and ultimately the best jobs.
Networking relationships are built on trust. When networking, you gain trust by asking not what people can do for you, but what you can do for others. Bottom line: It's better to give before you receive. And never keep score! If your interactions are ruled by your generosity, your rewards will follow suit.
Each of us is now a brand. Gone are the days where your value as an employee was linked to your loyalty and seniority. In today's fluid economy, you must develop strong enduring relationships with your network to succeed. By simply reaching out to others, and recognizing that no one does it alone, you'll see astounding results, quickly.
